This half term we are going to be using a new book as our hook. The book that we are going to use is ‘THE GREAT KAPOK TREE’. We will be thinking about our environment and the world that we live in and think about the impact that we have on the world.

We will study the rain-forest and the layers of that make up the rain-forest. The children can do some research linked to the rain-forests, what animals live there?, where the rain-forests are in the world?, choose an animal that they like and find out as much information as possible.

Please can you continue to read regularly (at least 3 times a week)and sign your child’s reading diary. There are links on the website to help your child practice their 2x ,3x, 5x and 10 x tables.

The children have used their BLP muscles to help them complete their challenges and missions.
FOREST SCHOOL

This half term we have been working collaboratively with Year 5. We have also been making links in Science e.g. looking at Plants and Habitats.

(Photos to follow)

Have a go at 'The Great Fire of London Game'
How many houses can you save?
The Great Fire of London
18.3.19

We have been learning about The Great Fire of London and written recounts about what happened in 1666. Please come and look at the children's writing on the 'Writing Wall of Fame'.
we have also been learning to sing in rounds and have written our own verses to go alongside the already famous 'London's Burning' nursery rhyme. Please keep an eye out for the new versions of the rhyme.

MUSIC
7.3.19

We have been learning about lots of different things in music. We have learned many new musical words that help us to understand what happens within a piece of music. At the moment we are learning about rhythm and rests. The children have been playing instruments and singing a variety of songs in order to give them the opportunity to hear this within a piece of music.

MATHS TIMES TABLES CHALLENGES

Here is a fun and interactive way for the children to practice their times tables.

Click the links below

HOME CHALLENGES

Please can you practice your times tables as they are an important part of our maths learning this term. The children are confident drawing pictures and arrays to help them with this but now need to have an instant recall of multiplication facts. We are looking at 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's. We are also setting ourselves an additional challenge to know our 4's and 6's also.
We have been using www.mymaths.co.uk to help support this in class.

PARENT MEETINGS

Parent meetings are on the
19th and 20th March.
Please can you book an appointment so that we can share your child's progress.
Thank you.

THANK YOU
15.2.19

A big thank you to everyone who has helped during our GROUNDS WEEK. School is looking amazing. I know that Class 2 had fun washing, cleaning and tidying in school.

Diary entries.
11th February 2019

We have continued to use our hook 'How to train your dragon' to inspire the children to write a diary entry about their first encounter with Toothless. The children have used role play and lots of talk partner, small co-operative group work and whole class learning in order to help them think about their writing. We have looked at the features of writing a diary entry and have written our first draft. We are looking at editing our work with a specific focus on ensuring that we have written a full sentence that makes sense and is demarcated properly.
How to train your dragon.
January 2019

We have been inspired by Hiccup and Toothless and been busy training dragons to do lots of different things. We have been very imaginative and written instructions to help you train a dragon if you get bored over the half-term. The children have trained their dragons to complete many challenges e.g. to fly, to do maths, to dance and many more. Please look at their amazing writing on the Writing Wall of Fame in Class.

Dear Parents, Carers,

We hope that you had a lovely Christmas break and managed to get some rest over the festive period! Thank you for all of your best wishes, presents and support throughout the last term.

HANDWRITING
We will be sending home handwriting books with the common exception words inside. Please can you get encourage your child to read them and write them making sure that they focus on letter formation, ascenders and descenders.

HOME CHALLENGE
Please can you look at animals that live near the Equator or any other places where the weather maybe hot or cold. We need to find out what they like to eat, where they live, what their young look like and any other interesting facts.

Thank you for your continued support from the Year 2 Team

FIRE SAFETY

'Matches, matches never touch cos they can hurt you very much.'

"The best morning ever in Year 2"

22nd November 2018

What an amazing day we have had. The children were not sure quite what to expect when they came into school today. In the hall we had some very special and unexpected visitors. It was so humbling to see the faces of the children as they walked into the hall to see two beautiful owls and a Harris Hawk. We were very lucky and would like to thank the Torbay Owl & Co. for giving up their time today to come and show us these beautiful birds of prey. We have been finding out lots of facts about owls and were able to share our many interesting and amazing facts with our friends.

The children are looking forward to writing about owls after being inspired by our lovely visitors. These are some of their thoughts and feelings about the morning.

'I felt excited and nervous'  Toby
'Wow!' Ellie
'Amazed to see the owls because I had never seen one before' Izzy
'Epic because we could see an owl flapping it's wings' Keenan
' I felt privileged to be so close to the owls.' Miss Chavner
'Amazing and epic' Isabel
'A dream come true!'

the whole class thought that the experience was amazing and the best morning ever!
THANK-YOU TO THE TORBAY OWL & Co FOR MAKING THE MORNING SO MEMORABLE AND TO THE P.T. F.A FOR HELPING TO MAKE IT SO SPECIAL TOO!!

ANTI-BULLYING WEEK
12th - 16th November 2018

This week we have been thinking about RESPECT and how we treat other people. We have explored how we may feel when people are not very respectful. The children used role play to explain their thoughts and feelings.

We will be using Numberblocks to help us visualise mathematical ideas e.g. comparing numbers. It is also a good way for the children to see numbers and how they work together when they are added or subtracted.
Daily Maths Challenge

We have been focusing on improving our fluency, speed and recall of maths facts everyday within our Maths lessons. We have been using the TOPMARKS website. The children have enjoyed using their skills and going against the clock to improve previous score.
This week in Year 2.

We have been busy thinking about this very special time of year. The children have looked at using the new whole school half term topic of COMPASSION. The children have been able to talk with EMPATHY and COMPASSION about showing Respect for all of the people and animals who have died in the wars. We have looked at all of the different coloured POPPIES and what they represent. We have also used a very beautiful and moving video clip from CBeebies to help as a stimulus for the children to share whole class discussions. Please click link below to have a look at it. REMEMBRANCE DAY POPPIES

Reading – please can you read regularly with your child. After you have read the book the children will complete a quiz on their book. They will be asked questions in relation to the text with a specific focus on comprehension and understanding of the text. We also encourage the children to think about texts that we read in class in greater depth. We encourage them to think about vocabulary, inference, predict, explanation, retrieval and sequencing.

Every Monday we will be encouraging the children to visit the Library to choose a book to share at home. Please ensure that the book is returned every week so that the children can change it. We will also be encouraging them to leave a review or comment about the book so that other children can read it.
