What lovely pictures of our visit to Holwell Villa Residential Home today. Heather and Julie took 10 children down for our second visit of the year. Our new friends loved seeing us as you can see in these fantastic pictures. This afternoon we completed our 'freezing and melting' experiment. We placed cups of water with objects into our freezer on Wednesday. Today we had the task of trying to break the blocks of ice to get our objects out. The children came up with fantastic ways to release their objects. Some smashed the ice, other used the sun to melt the ice, some used the heat from their hands while others used warm water to melt the ice. It was lovely to watch the children experiment with different ideas.

We have been investigating the Chinese New Year this week. Today we enjoyed tasting some traditional Chinese food. As you can see from the pictures, the children loved it! We learnt the Chinese New Year story and investigated traditional customs in China. The children designed and made their own Chinese lanterns as well as practising some Chinese writing. It has been a very enjoyable week...

Today we welcomed our school friend Lindsay to our class. Lindsay has a very special job within our community.......... she helps to train guide dogs! Lindsay visited us with a puppy called Fraser and 2 other working dogs. She also brought one of her friends who is partially sighted to meet the children. We learnt a lot about how guide dogs learn and are trained as well as what life is like to not have 100% vision.

Our book of the week this week is 'What the Ladybird Heard'. We have been investigating the main character in the story.....the ladybird. We have enjoyed ladybird songs as well as finding out about the life-cycle of a ladybird. Yesterday we sequenced the life-cycle and today we have matched different foods to their respective pictures to represent the stages the ladybird goes through. The tasting was delicious this morning. Later this week we will be making our own story maps. There are also some photos of our visit to forest school last week. Despite the wind and cold it was great fun!

What a great first day back to school we have had! The teamwork, sharing and caring for one another has been amazing. Our first visit to Holwell Villa was a great success today. 10 children with Mr Gill and Heather went down to the Residential Home to visit and make new friends with the residents. The children were fantastic, showing empathy and compassion towards our older friends. We also learnt that we had to be patient as our new friends were a little slower than we were! We played with the train sets, coloured some Christmas decorations, sang and danced to our Christmas songs, listened to stories and had some lovely conversations with our new friends.

This afternoon we visited Brixham College for a 'Festival of Games'. GCSE students from the college had set up a number of games and activities for us to enjoy as part of their course. We not only enjoyed the challenges on offer but made new friendships with the students. Our links with the college have proved very strong this year and we hope to continue to enjoy the bonds we have made.

This week we have been enjoying 'Rosie's Walk' as our book of the week. We have been re-telling the story by adding actions to the words and also designing story maps. On Monday we had a visit from our musician Jo who gave us a live performance from her band 'Star Gazey Pie'. They performed a number of folk songs to us with their instruments which included a recorder, a mandolin, a banjo, an accordion and a flute. Today we welcomed some friends from Brixham College. The students were here to play and learn alongside us this afternoon. We made new friends and even taught the older students some of our Christmas songs we have been learning.

This week we have been enjoying the story of 'Oliver's Fruit Salad'. This has led to lovely discussions around healthy foods and our bodies. The children have been investigating what helps our body grow, proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins. We also know how to look after our bodies to keep them fit and healthy through sleeping and exercising! We had a visit from Wayne our chef who talked to us about what foods we need to help our bodies. On Tuesday the children made and drank their own fruit smoothies by following some very important instructions. We called these instructions 'bossy words' because they told us what to do. Enjoy our 'smoothie' pictures...

Our investigations this week have led us to Brixham Fire Station. We began exploring people around our local community that help us and our local firefighters proved extremely popular. Freya's daddy Mike is a Fireman in Brixham so we went down to visit him and his colleague Josh. They showed us around the fire station, talked to us about fire safety, showed us how the fire engine works and we even listened to their alarm call. Later in the morning we went on board the fire engine, investigated the oxygen tanks and masks before getting the chance to put out some pretend fires with the hose. It was an amazing experience. Mike and Josh asked some of the teachers to dress up in the firefighter overalls so they could explain how they stay safe. Enjoy the photos...

Our 'Book of the Week' is currently 'Funnybones'. The children have been investigating their bodies, drawing self-portraits, learning the names of some of their bones and drawing their own skeletons. We also made tally- charts to compare eye colours and investigated scales to compare our weight. The children have loved these investigations and have led their own learning in a range of situations. A great example of this was making their own see-saws outside and telling us 'they were like our scales'. Making links in their learning is really important, especially at this age. Today Noah asked me to sing 'Peace and Harmony' with him on the ukulele! Being a Peppa Pig fan I recognised the song and we played the music on our computer. Within 2 minutes we had a full range of instruments in our band and many happy faces singing and dancing along...

What a busy week we have had in Class Reception this week. The children have been getting used to our routines without any issues at all. We have enjoyed our lunchtimes in the hall, especially pizza, roast chicken and fish fingers on Friday! Our outdoor classroom has been extremely popular with the children. They understand that it is a classroom without a roof. There are so many learning opportunities outside whether the sun is shining or the rain is falling. We've had Superhero play, police role-play, builders in the sandpit and music bands amongst other things. Here is a video of a moment in time from our outdoor classroom this morning...
