Class 2: The Seahorses

Welcome to Year 2

Class Teacher - Mrs Akery
Learning Support Assistants (LSA's) - Jo Parkes, Lucy Lucas, Cheryl Evans, Michele Rundle and Garry Vian

Welcome back.

We would like to welcome everyone back and wish you all a Happy New Year. We have lots of exciting things planned this term and are hoping to arrange for some visitors to come into school to inspire the children. Our main focus for this half term is non-fiction texts and non-chronological reports will be our writing focus. We will be looking at the features of a non-fiction text and applying this in our English lessons.

We would like to welcome Mrs Wills to Class 2 who will be with us for the first half of the Spring term. She has lots of exciting things planned for the children and has set them a challenge liked to ‘The Great Fire of London.’

Please can you continue to read regularly as this will help them to grow in confidence and fluency when reading? We have been encouraging the children to think about texts in greater depth e.g. making predictions, linking stories or texts to things they have read before and vocabulary used within texts.
(Please look at the new VIPERS display in the classroom)

We will be using the text OWL MOON as a link to our Christian value of PERSEVERANCE.

Please continue to practise 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x tables

PE is now on a WEDNESDAY

If you have any queries please feel free to pop into class and have a chat.
Thank you for your continued support.

The Class 2 team.

In music we have continued to learn many new things. We have listened to music in order to find the beat and keep time. we have also been learning the technical vocabulary for the names of notes and how much they are worth in a piece of music. We recently put our skills to the test and looked at a Christmas piece of music and found MINIMS, CROTCHETS and QUAVERS. Ask your child to tell you what they know about the piece of sheet music.
Letters to Father Christmas.

We have written our letters to Father Christmas this year but with a small twist. The children have used their Christian Values of LOVE and COMPASSION and written t him asking for something not for them but other children in the world. This linked beautifully with our recent 'Operation Shoebox Appeal' and the children have written some very thoughtful, caring letters. Quotes from their work to follow.
What's been happening in Year 2?

We have been very busy and have been practicing our 2's, 5's and 10 times tables. We are becoming very good at recalling our multiplication facts. We have been around the world with Wandering Smurf and have visited all seven continents and the five oceans. We sued atlases to help us locate the continents and find out interesting facts. One continent that became a special interest and we linked our Geography and History topics to explore it even further. We learned about Captain Scott's trip across the barren ice desert of Antarctica and what happened to him on his travels.
Class 2 have written some recounts of his journey and are editing them. They have really enjoyed finding out about his journey and the animals and creatures he met along the way. We have used this epic adventure to talk about B.L.P skills that he and his team used and the Christian Values they shared with one and other.
P.E on Tuesday.
Please can you remember your kit.
Show and Tell
The children are given an opportunity to talk about something that is important to them. This helps to promote speaking and listening skills and time to think about appropriate questions to ask their peers.
This week during our drumming lesson we began to learn an African song.

I can join in and talk about books, poems and other works that are read to me and those that I can read, taking turns and listening to what others say.
I can use the bar model to help me understand mathematical problems.

I can identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other.
Always ready to help.
Adam has been a really helpful young man and he is proud to share what he has been doing to be a superstar.
Two Times Table
One of our favourite songs.
Reflective Time in Year 2.
week beginning 25th September 2017

In Year 2 we have been using our reflective tree to think about TRUST. We worked together in class to think about who we TRUST and why we TRUST them. We drew around our hands and thought about five people who they TRUST.
Dragon Models.
week beginning 25th September 2017

We have been inspired to make our own models of dragons after watching a clip of 'How to train your dragon' The children are working towards a progress piece of instructional writing.
18th September 2017
Today we watched a clip from the film 'How to train your dragon' in order to think about what Hiccup does to gain Toothless' trust.
We talked about how each character was feeling and then how slowly Hiccup begins to gain Toothless' trust. We worked collaboratively with our partners to create a role play to help show how we could gain the trust of our dragon in order to feel empathy with our characters.

What a week!!
14th September 2017

We have been very busy in Year 2 this week having fun flying around the United Kingdom. During our Geography lesson we boarded and plane and flew to the different capital cities of the UK. Lucas was an amazing Captain and flew us all safely to our destinations. Jasmine and Wandering Smurf were a great help embarking and disembarking everyone safely from the plane. The children then located where they had been in the United Kingdom using atlases discussing the size of the countries in comparison to each other. We will keep you up to date with our future travels.

Our special Gift from Mrs Rushton.
7th September 2017
Today during our special 'Thinking Thursday' Act of Worship with Mrs Rushton we used our noticing skills to notice what had changed in the hall. Mrs Rushton gave us a special gift to share when we got back to class. We talked as a class what we thought may be inside. Cailan's suggestion was 'a glass tree' and amazingly this is what we received. The children talked about the importance of the three candles and what they mean. The children shared that the three candles represented The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit and the tree on the front represented our school vision and values.
